She is pictured with one of her two sons, Samuel Ceballo, 8-years old, in their apartment at the Mitchell Houses complex in the South Bronx. Mercado had hoped to use her training to become a medical assistant. She is currently being denied a diploma due to a financial dispute with the school. She currently works as a housekeeper and valet parking attendant to pay Catholic school tuition for her sons, amongst other expenses.
