It's really a manmade, springfed pond, not a pool, surrounded by sandy beaches, lawns, oak and cottonwood shade trees, with white wooden lifeguard stands, rafts, diving boards, etc. For decades it's been the village's jewel, the one distinctive thing everybody talks about..Now a group wants to plow it under and convert it to a.country-club-style concrete complex with waterpark features. No more pond, no more sand. They think the existing pond is too natural -- and too "dirty" since the water isn't clear and chlorinated. They have raised a bunch of money and done some studies, all very biased, and are pushing the village council to spend $10 million or more. It looked like the thing was going to be ramrodded through when about three weeks ago a woman named Suzanne Kelley, starting as what she called a coalition of one, stood up and said stop. She started gathering signatures among people who either like the pond the way it is or think it's crazy during these tough times to spend $10 million to fix something that ain't broke.
