  • Eugene Lemay, President of Moishe's Moving, poses for a portrait in the ESKFF main gallery space..---.Wed Dec 14, 2011: Mana Center for Contemporary Art, at 888 Newark Avenue in Jersey City, NJ consists of gallery spaces, art storage facilities, framing and restoration facilities and is run by Eugene Lemay, President of Moishe's Moving and Storage. "Moishe's Moving and Storage is moving into the art world. Moishe's has purchased 1.5 million square feet of storage space in Jersey City, and has turned it into a contemporary art center, complete with galleries, performance space and beer garden. It's the biggest art center in Jersey City, and a completely for-profit venture. The business plan: provide art storage for major collectors and transform the interior of the warehouse into column-less, white-walled galleries to display those collections to the public. On display now: a half a dozen paintings by Chuck Close, and a major collection of works of photo realism. The Center also provides framing and art restoration services, and rents studios to established visual artists. The person behind all this is the President of Moishe's, Eugene Lemay. Lemay, born a Lebanese-Christian, moved from Detroit to Israel as a boy in the 60s, converted to Judaism, served during the 1982 war in Lebanon, and then returned to the U.S. and started working as a mover for Moishe's. He's driven to use art as a way to "build bridges" across cultures, but he's too much of a businessman to do it without also making a profit. Hence, the Mana Center for Contemporary Art. The Center officially opens to the public in February, and can be toured by appointment only anytime..Credit: Rob Bennett for The Wall Street Journal.Slug: NYMOISHESART

  • Here, Inge is carried by her "mother," Holly Sundbeck, in the elevator of the Hotel New Yorker..---.New York, NY: Feb 13 2011: "Inge" (official full name is Grand Champion Hanna's Dan Inge Fair Sun,) the #2 nationally ranked Standard Poodle is owned by Arvid and Holly (713-818-5894) Sundbeck of Beach City, TX. She is groomed by Kadie Bonds (936-444-3064) and handled by Betty Brown. The WSJ followed Inge's journey through the 135th Westminster Kennel Club dog show. First held in 1877, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is America's second-longest continuously held sporting event, behind only the Kentucky Derby. Inge and her entourage - which included "parents", a groomer, a handler, a photographer and a veterinarian - arrived via private jet on Friday afternoon and resided at the New Yorker Hotel on 34th and 8th during their stay. Included in this collection are images of the arrival at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on Friday, a Sunday grooming session in the New Yorker's Pet "Spa" followed by a dinner of several McDonald's cheeseburgers. On Monday, Inge left the hotel just after 6AM, walked a few blocks to Madison Square Garden and spent the next 5 or so hours being prepped by groomer Kadie Bonds for the "Best of Breed" competition, where she was to compete against 22 of the finest Standard Poodles in existence. The four year-old female (or "bitch" in dog circles) entered Ring One with handler Betty Brown around 11:45AM and, after three rounds of assessment by judge Dennis McCoy, was eventually granted an "Award of Merit", essentially identifying her as the second best bitch in the breed. Her entourage was mostly excited - it is a significant honor to receive any acknowledgement at the WKC show - but a tinge of disappointment was detectable as anything but a "Best of Breed" rank signified the end of Inge's journey in New York..---.Credit: Rob Bennett for The Wall Street Journal.Slug:
