SCUBA Cops Submerge in East River, Rescue VictimAdd to Lightbox Download
Images from the scene of a (miraculous?) mid-day Monday rescue of a woman from the East River in the vicinity of 106th Street. Responding to multiple calls of a woman in the river, 23rd, 19th, Harbor, and Aviation Precinct officers as well as members of the elite Emergency Service Unit flooded the scene and found nothing other than dozens of curious onlookers. Witness Glen Delaney (212-650-0204 or 212-988-2186 1500 First Ave. at 78/79) was overheard at the scene saying that a woman had looked at him while dangling over the water and said "Do you believe in Jesus?" before pushing herself into the water. Still, no sign of a victim. Two NYPD Harbor Division SCUBA divers then entered the river and, after approximately 5 minutes submerged, PO Delaney (same name as witness, no known relation) and PO Sherman (718-765-4100 x28 or 29) surfaced, an unconscious, middle aged, African-American woman in their grasp. The victim/EDP? was then quickly removed from the water and rushed to a nearby hospital in unknown condition.
